The town of Grazalema, one of the “white villages” of the Sierra de Cádiz, is a small and beautiful town of 2,000 inhabitants, at an altitude of 800m. Its name derives from the Berber name “Ben Zulema”, when the Muslims occupied the area; and is currently part of the recognized Moorish route from Gibraltar to Granada. It is a reference point of the Natural Park especially, for hikers and cyclists and bird watchers.

An ideal place for a good rest among beautiful landscapes, where occasionally there may be snow. Grazalema is popular for its wild life, the great variety of flora that illuminates it in spring, when we find many species of orchids. Its Sierra is famous for its enormous fauna and a wide range of landscapes, from cork oak forests to peaks such as “El Torreón”, the highest mountain in the area (approx. 1600 m). There are many traditional trails that connect the villages going into the mountains and valleys. The one that leads to the village of Benamahoma, crosses through the forest of the famous Pinsapos, an ancient tree from the ice age that is found in very few places in the world. The area also offers various sports activities such as rock climbing, hand-gliding, and caving and important geological and archaeological sites such as the prehistoric paintings of the “Cueva de la Pileta”.
Grazalema was the site chosen for the first anthropological study of Europe. Of interest are its ancestral traditional summer festivals, its legends and customs. Today, the town has a good selection of bars and restaurants that offer a gastronomy of traditional mountain plates and indigenous products. The wines from the Cádiz and Ronda wineries can be tasted on the terraces that surround the lively central square where the locals usually gather.
